March Photo Challenge - Day 18

Wanted to do something different today, something I've been meaning to do for a while now. I think my first attempt came out pretty good. I'm happy with it. I know I can refine it and do better in the future, though.

March Photo Challenge - Day 17

It was a cold, wet and relatively quiet St. Patrick's Day for me this year. Spent it alone, for the most part. My photo opportunities were extremely limited by the rains. Which is too bad, because I was actually fairly motivated to take some shots today. The power was on, but I just wasn't in service...

March Photo Challenge - Day 15

So Day 15 got a bit lost during Blogger.com's weird behaviour on Friday night and instead was showing Day 16. Here's the real Day 15 from our company's Interns Day event:

March Photo Challenge - Day 14

Today was a bit rough. I had to make full use of everything I've been learning not just during my sessions, but also in the amazing book I've been reading. This book has, more or less, become my bible. Anyway, I don't really want to ramble on, I just want to post this photo and go to sleep. Stay positive and be strong. Life is short, cherish every moment you have... Simple:

March Photo Challenge - Day 13

Today was a bit of a wash. My mind has been preoccupied with some news I received last night so today seems like it almost didn't happen. I'm doing better now. Focusing on the now, fully aware of everything around me and being open to it. Today's photo kind of reflects the dream-like nature of today, I suppose. I'm certain I've been in dreams that look like this.

March Photo Challenge - Day 12

Even with the longer days, sunlight-wise, I still found myself looking for a night shot to take. Another night, another window shop. I think I'm enjoying this kind of window shopping.

March Photo Challenge - Day 11

Rose Bowl Flea Market yesterday afternoon, the scene of the crime. She never lets me take her photo. She doesn't trust me to get the "right" angle or something. Every angle seems right to me when it comes to her. I tried to snap a shot of her without her noticing, but I was unsuccessful... or was I?

March Photo Challenge - Day 10

On my 10th day, I went to catch one of my favorite new bands, Crocodiles, at the Echoplex with the lovely Lu Torres. I didn't think I'd be able to take my camera in, but after signing their photography waiver and getting my media wrist band, I was good to go. The show itself was pretty freakin' spectacular. Dunes opened up and were alright, followed by Bleeding Rainbow who were pretty freaking bad-ass. And, finally, Crocodiles killed it! They were phenomenal. Sounded just as good (if not better) live as they do on the album and their stage presence is through the roof! They played "Hearts of Love" which is one of my favorites and it was just awesome!

Instead of one photo, I'm going with three today. My favorite shot from the three bands that played last night. Here they are:

March Photo Challenge - Day 8 and 9

Before I say anything about the photos, I'd like to apologize for falling behind by a couple of days. I promise that the two photos here were taken on their respective days (8 March and 9 March). I was with a very trustworthy person both night and I'm sure she can vouch for me if you have any doubts at all.

First up, Wilshire Blvd. Not much to say here. It's always a tricky thing photographing homeless people. There's a fine line between acceptable photograph and plain exploitation. And, though I always make sure to leave some money behind after my shot, I still walk away feeling utterly defeated and with a heavy heart.

Just to balance the mood and lighten things up a bit, my photo from yesterday was a bit more light-hearted. I was waiting for my food order at Huarache Azteca in Highland Park to be ready and found this lady sitting outside doing the same. I took a few shots, shooting from the hip and managed to get a half-way decent one.

And now I must be off. Time to capture Day 10. Until tomorrow!

March Photo Challenge - Day 7

Today was a rough one at work. Another long day left me with little energy to go out looking for a photo to shoot. To make matters worse, once I got into the mood and started snapping a few shots, my camera's battery died. Total amateur move and one of the first things you should always check before you start shooting. It was one of those George Carlin, "f***ing meeow" kind of moments. So here's today's photo. Bit of humor, a touch of surrealism and completely ridiculous:

March Photo Challenge - Day 6

This is a bit late, but I didn't have a chance to upload this when I got home last night. This band played at Scotland Yard last night. It was my first time back there on a Tuesday since I was threatened to death. Haha! Anyway, they're called Against the Rest and they were pretty rad. Don't really have much more to say other than that, so here it is, Day 6:

March Photo Challenge - Day 5

"I'm seeing a tunnel at the end of all of these lights."

I took this photo on my way home from work. The sun had set and so I was a bit worried I wouldn't find something decent to shoot for today. I found this scene on the same route I take home every day. I don't know how or why I've overlooked it for so long. Definitely need to purchase a new tripod, though. So here it is, Day 5. Hope you all had an amazing day.

Day 4 | Day 6

March Photo Challenge - Day 4

Today was a bit of an odd day. As I type this, it seems like today did not happen at all. It's as though I dreamt it. I made my way down to Union Station on the Metro today, hoping to try out a new taco spot on Figueroa. I walked about a mile there in the hot March son (haha! how crazy is it to say that, even for California?) only to realize they were closed on Sunday. So I trekked back down to Placita Olvera and plopped myself down at El Paseo Inn restaurant and treated myself to a few Margaritas and a late lunch.

And, just as I thought the day couldn't get any better, Lu took me up on my offer and met up with me for a few drinks. Good times. I love hanging out with her! I even helped her pick out a super cool dress today. By the way, she looks amazing in it!! Shheeeow!!! Which brings me to my photo for today. I actually managed to take a few really cool shots, and so I was a bit pressed to choose one. That is, until I saw Lu's 30-Day Challenge for the day. It's only appropriate that on Sunday, we both go with our good friend, Chuey. Se persinan!

March Photo Challenge - Day 3

Took the Metro to Highland Park / Mount Washington today. Needed to make a small purchase of some kind. I made my purchase and the proprietor of the shop was actually a really cool dude. I'd not taken into account, however, just how large this item was and there was no way I'd be able to take it with me on the train, so I called up my brother Daniel and he came through by picking me up. I had to leave this item at his house, but I trust it is in good hands for now and until I pick it up.

It was especially bright and warm this afternoon. Okay, it was absolutely fucking gorgeous outside today. It made it difficult to concentrate on taking photos as I was completely immersed in soaking up as much of the day as possible. I was feeling down-right nature-y, borderline hippie-ish. So, I suppose that explains today's photo. As I walked with my brother, his compadre and his son to get some food, I came across this little scene which caught my eye. I got down low for this one and it actually came out alright. Hope you dig it:

March Photo Challenge - Day 2

This evening (02 March 2012) I attended the "Street Vendor Fundraiser, Part Dos!" organized by the East LA Community Corporation. I met up with Lu (Tortilla y Comal and Three.Hundred.Sixty.Life), who works in the area, on my way there. I'm pretty sure we both had a good time, especially when it came to loading up on delicious street vendor food. Food coma! The event itself was in support of street vendors and the fight to legalize street vending in L.A. They managed to raise lots of money and, overall, it was a huge success.

This photo comes by way of the Metro Gold Line platform at Union Station as I was on my way to meet up with Lu Lu. He seemed very anxious and had a nervous energy about him. He kept looking to either side, back and forth, back and forth. I quickly set up the shot and click! click! click! Soon after I snapped a few shots, he got up and disappeared down the stairs. Enjoy:

March Photo Challenge - Day 1

I decided to take on a 30 day challenge proposed by Lu Torres (Follow her amazing blog: Tortilla y Comal). The challenge: "The next 30 days are going to pass by whether you like it or not, so why not add something to them that you love..." Naturally, I've decided to shoot and post at least one photo every day for the next 30 days. Thanks, Lu. I love you. :)

Working full time during the day really doesn't give me much time to look for and take a great shot. Never has that been more obvious than today. So, without rambling on any more than I have to, here is Day 1. It's not my best work by far, but it definitely called out to me, did this tree. There's a bit of symbolism here, too. I will keep that to myself, though. Enjoy:
